LADS was a recognized SLU student organization that developed and promoted the Pelican Skeleton. Navy blue t-shirts were sold with the Pelican Skeleton screen printed on the back and the LADS logo on the front pocket. The SLU student body and general public purchased these t-shirts as a fund raiser for environmental issues addressed by LADS, such as the extinction of the Louisiana state bird -- the brown pelican. All the brown pelicans seen today have been naturalized from Florida.

LADS were students who did not wish to be stereotyped as Greeks/Fratties, Jocks, Glamour Types, Progressives, Party Animals, Surfers, or Dweebs. They were independent thinking students of all traditions from freshmen to seniors. They also represented the democratic politics of our nation.

In order for LADS to maneuver within the student government of SLU, LADS members formed a political action organization: New Age Political Action, also known as New Age Student League. Its purpose was to get LADS involved in SLU student government as senators and president.
